A coach’s record is somebody else’s results

An athlete proves themselves with their own rankings, medals and prize money. A coach has none of that. What a coach has is a list of other people’s achievements — and a petition that simply recites them is answering a question USCIS did not ask.

The evidence has to connect the athlete’s result back to the coach’s work. Not “he coached a national champion” but what he changed, when he was brought in, what the athlete could not do before and could afterwards, and who outside the relationship will say so on the record.

Which is why the expert letters do the heavy lifting. This kit contains thirteen coaching expert letters for three different coaches at one Major League Soccer club, plus seven more for a single boxing coach. Reading them side by side shows what a usable coaching letter says and what a useless one says.

And many coaches are filing the wrong classification entirely. A coach who travels with a specific athlete may not need an O-1 at all — O-2 and P-1S exist for exactly that, they are easier to evidence, and they are the ones most often got wrong.

Four routes, and how to tell them apart

O-1A

The coach in their own right, extraordinary ability in athletics. Petitioned by a club, an academy or an agent. The kit has full filings from all three shapes.

O-1B

For coaches in artistic disciplines — martial arts, figure skating, skateboarding — where the work is closer to the arts than to athletics. The choice changes the criteria you must meet.

O-2

The person accompanying an O-1 athlete whose skills cannot be readily replaced. It stands or falls on the working relationship, not on the coach’s own acclaim.

P-1S

Essential support personnel travelling with a P-1 athlete or team. Often the cleanest route for a coach, and the least used.
